Happy Friday + Interiors

I met Terry when we both worked at a local flower & boutique shop. She - the amazing, talented, hilarious floral designer. Me - I sold over-priced candles and boxed her creations. We re-connected after going our separate ways, and realized we love many of the same things. The first time I stepped into Terry's house and saw her quaint backyard pool surrounded by wild roses, raspberry bushes, and hop vines and the swing underneath a pergola with a rusty chandelier, I thought of the book Virgin Suicides. Her house is the house I imagined to be in that book. Love at first site and I had to document it, so full of life and so Terry. By trade Terry is an artist, greeting card designer, photographer, floral designer (she created the beauties here), and gardener. I look forward to summer drives that lead to nowhere in particular with this special lady. Enjoy getting to know Terry. {Can you tell I love the jeweled mirror she made! The picture of the scarecrow and man is haunting, but it's one of my favorites things in her house. Underneath the picture it says Comrade.}

What's for breakfast? Either plain yogurt with nuts or Oatmeal with nuts. COFFEE

What do you collect? Books, pictures, art supplies, garden pots.

What are you listening to? I love to listen to Patty Griffin, Jackson Browne, Doc Watson, Tom T Hall

What did you always dream of becoming?  A woman with an apple orchard and a little pie shop.

What are a few of your favorite things?  Sitting on the front porch at our farm in Iowa with my mom and dad, road tripping with my sisters,  WORT radio in Madison: The Tuesday morning (For the sake of the Song with Jim Schwall) and Wednesday morning (Back to the Country with Bill Malone) shows. Listening to books on C.D. while in the car.

Describe yourself: Curious, creative, fun, grateful, kinda shy

What's the best advice you've ever heard?  In my dream my dad said ”Never make fun of someone or treat them unkindly or hate them because someday the two who you mistreated may save your life, it happened to me”

What is your favorite quote?  Come let us stray our gladsome way and view the charms of nature; The rustling corn, the fruited thorn and every happy creature.

What words of wisdom do you live your life by? My mom always told us “it’s what’s in your heart that counts”

What are you most thankful for in your life? Family

Meaningful Things

The dressing area in my bedroom holds a very treasured possession. My Grandpa's navy blue newsboy cap. He always wore it paired with the greatest rings and watches; for a farmer, he loved looking good! I'm so happy I have this and a few other things that were his. This space is a work in progress but for now, I have my frequently worn jewelry in a shallow patterned dish and a summer clutch within reach. A few summer staples are on hooks to the right of this space. I like to have meaningful things next to the every-day. Grandpa would be happy I have some of his favorite records, too. Ahh, the days of sitting in the living room playing old records with him. I would give anything for one more day.

What a welcome weekend after a lot of craziness this week. Man oh man, it was nice to catch up with friends. And I styled a home for an interiors shoot (the other photos turned out too dark, so I went back.) Can't wait to share!! Love, love, love this woman. She printed song lyrics and wrapped them in ribbon for me and the photographer. She has the most lovely wreath of jewels that she made with all of her old brooches and pins that hangs above her bed. Truly an artists home; life in every nook and cranny. We played music, talked about books and ate quiche. I always leave inspired, wanting to inspire others.

You see, the moon is bright in that treetop night
I see the shadows that we cast in the cold, clean light
My feet are gold. My heart is white
And we race out on the desert plains all night

Happy Friday + Interiors

It's Friday! Another interiors post! This room has all the things I love in a living room - black accents everywhere, wood floors, piano (hello, beautiful old bench! learn how to play the piano - it's on the list!), ornate french gold mirror, and crystal candle holders. Perfect mix of styles; it works because the colors {black and gold} are repeated throughout the space. The bench fabric plays off the wall color. Did you notice? Have a fabulous weekend, folks!

never too soon
oh, reckless abandon
like no one's watching you

Back Home

Missing home. And Spring and Summer in the country. Grateful I have home and the country to go back to.

Domino + Interiors

Domino magazine is no longer a monthly publication, however, they publish special editions every season. It's a must-have for anyone that loves interiors. Domino introduced and gave access to well-designed spaces and trade secrets to the masses. I learned about them right before they stopped publishing, so I only have a few of their magazines. This issue is about small spaces, organizing the chaos and de-cluttering.  "Edit every day". I love Domino because the homes are lived-in. I'm so tired of super styled homes that look like they have a pedigree. I'm more of a mutt dog kind of girl. P.S. I added brooches to my tray that my Grandma gave me when I was little. She has great style, even in her 80s, and has always loved bright colors, too. Muah, I love her!!

My sister Faith is getting married to Kevin this summer! August 10th to be exact! And Faith asked me to style her wedding. Of course!!! I was so excited and humbled because, if you know her, she wouldn't just ask me because I'm her sister and that's what she should do:) That's the red head in her :) And that's also why I love her. Faith and Kevin are an amazing couple and I can't wait to see their life unfold. We are planning an outdoor mountain wedding at the bottom of the Snowy Mountain Range in Wyoming. A little vintage, rustic, modern and romantic combination in mint green, gold, and peachy-rose. I think I'm going to sneak some navy blue in there, too. The details are coming together as we talk on the phone and brainstorm ideas. Check out their engagement photos here with the Ely Brothers

Ended the weekend with homemade breakfast apple cake & coffee and being grateful. This week I'm sharing a few more found things, a very special wedding I'm styling this summer, and a styled dinner gathering. Have a great week.

You'll need coffee shops and sunsets and road trips. Airplanes and passports and new songs and old songs, but people more than anything else. You will need other people and you will need to be that other person to someone else, a living breathing screaming invitation to believe better things. ~ Jamie Tworkowski

Happy Friday + Interiors

This chic has serious style and an eye for mixing high and low. I enjoyed reading about her personal design tastes and how she furnished a bare house in two months by scouring consignment shops and thrift stores. My kind of gal. And we both love our iced coffees! Her result is functional yet personal and laid-back. You'll love her secrets for simple every day living and entertaining. (*hint* everything is casual and comfortable and seasonal) The bowl of cherries makes me miss my home state of Michigan and Holland beaches. Fall in love with her style and read the rest here. My favorite thing she said about making her house into a home: "All homes get better with age as they start to tell a story…of the things you’ve found along the way…or special little gifts…and you can’t buy that."

Found Things

It's no surprise to friends and family that I love finding things. Especially old things. Things that have history and wear and tear. Things that someone actually made and put their time into. While I was out and about the other day I was on a mission to find a certain thing. As is always the case, I didn't find it, but I found something else that was on my radar.....a brass tray for my kitchen table. Now it holds mail, notes, keys and inspiration I tear out. Boden catalogs have the best props, by the way. I also came across two very old books about building railroads, circa 1906. The camel colored book is actually about the railroads in Mexico and is written in Spanish and English. I swooped it up right away. Right next to it was another book about railroads in the color I've been searching for....a dark moody teal. I'll be adding it into the mix of bright colors throughout my place. I love finding unexpected things!

March 11, 2013

Saturday morning started with powder sugar and cinnamon sugar donuts, really great friends, and lots of coffee. I don't function in the morning until I start drinking it, but the morning routine of brewing coffee is what I love more. That's another post for another day. Powder sugar donuts are a family favorite I don't make as often as I would like, but as soon as I smelled the dough hit the oil it took me back to the many mornings my mom made them for us. She knew it made seven kids very happy :) We fought to shake the paper bag full of powder sugar donuts and it was a race to eat as many as we could. They are super easy so I plan to make more soon and experiment with different glazes and toppings. This week I'm sharing snippets of Terry's house and interview, tips for decorating and styling your own home, and a few things I found recently. Because it's pretty much what I do all the time. Find things.

Happy Friday + Interiors

Now that Spring is almost here (please!) I'm looking forward to flowering branches in large glass vases and jars on my kitchen table. An easy way to add seasonal pastels to your decor.  Looking forward to getting some things done around the house this weekend like re-finishing my kitchen table for the um, 3rd time, brunch with a friend and looking for fabric for a chair I'm re-upholstering. It's been a couple of years since my last project, so hopefully I remember :)
